Blog 2011 April Kansas will Track DUI Offenders Previous Post | Next Post Kansas will Track DUI Offenders Posted By DUI Attorney Charles Green || 30-Apr-2011 The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) have announced they will work together to compile and administer a centralized database that will track DUI offenders and those with multiple DUI convictions in the State of Kansas. The proposed 'DUI Repository' would be run by the KBI and presumably would provide quicker and more comprehensive access to Prosecutors filing charges on DUI Offenders so that they can be identified and charged correctly if they have a previous history of DUI offenses. The idea of a Central DUI Repository was recommended by the Kansas DUI Commission as part of its proposal to revise and 'toughen up' Kansas DUI laws and DUI Enforcement. State budget problems had put plans for the Repository in doubt recently, but the proposal by KDOT to spend about $2.5 million on the project appear to make the implementation of such a database more likely. These changes to DUI Laws in Kansas have been coming for some time, and also include proposals for prison sentences for repeat offenders and even an ignition interlock requirement for first-time offenders. We may see these proposals become a reality as early as this summer, see my earlier post. If you are facing a DUI charge in Kansas, you and your lawyer need to be aware of the status of current DUI laws and proposed legislation; what is true today may not be accurate later this year.
